The month of February began with a mystery. One might expect to hear that it ended with a resolution, but the nature of provenance research isn't so simple.  

Lawton Parker’s painting is a striking, intimate portrait. The close-up depiction of the subject's face and neck draws the viewer into the subtle details of her facial expression. Angled in a three-quarter view, she gazes out, her downturned lips and eyes hint at a somber tone. Half of her face is cloaked in shadow, adding gravity to the portrait. Parker paints the subject with a dark, tonal approach here, eschewing the luminism of the Giverny works that he would become famous for. Instead, he paints her in the manner of his traditional portrait work, often of “great men” like that of Harry Pratt Judson and Martin A. Ryerson, two works painted for the University of Chicago in 1903.   

It was in that summer of 1903 that Parker moved to Giverny to join the international cohort of artists following Monet. While his earlier work focused on studio-posed figures, his Giverny period is defined by women dappled in sunlit gardens, plein air painting with bright palettes and broken brushwork. It is tempting then to claim this work as pre-Giverny, a sentiment echoed by 1910 reviews of the Giverny group show at Madison Gallery, claiming the artists “completely changed their style.” However, Parker continued to produce traditional portraits throughout his career (even in his solo show at the Art Institute of Chicago two years later, in 1912, Parker presents several traditional portraits alongside his Impressionist works). It's in his portraiture that he often returned to his Academic discipline, no doubt firmly established by his time studying at the École des Beaux Arts and Académie Julian, thus making it difficult to place this work in a particular moment.   

The portrait arrived with the title “Sarah Snowdon Parker,” perhaps suggesting a depiction of the artist’s mother, Sarah, who Lawton produced a few paintings of later in life. However, census records show that his mother’s name was Sarah Ann Sawyer, not Snowdon. In 1927, Parker married a librarian named Beatrice Snow. Snow close! It seems likely the title is an amalgamation of his wife and mother’s names, erroneously labeled as “Sarah Snowdon Parker.”

The verso, or reverse side of an artwork, which often offers insight into a piece and its provenance, in this instance, only elicits more questions. On the back Parker has sketched another composition, a woman seated in an interior, unfinished in a way that it might be mistaken for a work by Édouard Vuillard. The sketch is of a woman seated at the center of the room beside an empty chair. Parker has vaguely defined the room, with a fireplace on the far wall and a glass display case behind her. Should the two works be seen in relation to one another? Does the empty chair hold significance, possibly an insight into the woman’s dour appearance in the portrait painting? Was he working out another painting of her, or simply utilizing empty canvas? 

This painting remained in the artist’s collection until after his death in 1954, eventually sold alongside a few other works to a private collector in Los Angeles. Perhaps the fact that the intimate portrait was still in Parker’s possession suggests it holds some importance. It survived his frequent moves between Chicago, New York, and Paris, as well as the fire that destroyed his studio in Giverny during World War II. 

The work is unique among Parker’s oeuvre. Yes, in his portrait paintings he followed this more traditional style, but he rarely cropped so closely to the face in painting, and in most of his portrait works the sitter, even the women, look out at the painter with agency. Here, she looks away, allowing us to study her without acknowledgement of our scrutiny. What significance could this hold for the subject and artist? What was it about this subject that made him capture a more somber and accurate likeness, an image of this woman in this moment? In a 1914 review, poet and novelist Eunice Tietjens, noted that, “This portrait style of Mr. Parker’s is very different from his Giverny style. He developed it much earlier in his career, but still uses it on occasion. The difference is one of psychological viewpoint rather than of technic. A portrait, he feels, should be a livable presentation of the subject. It is not a picture to be looked at casually and passed by, but a work to be lived with intimately for long spaces of time.” Indeed, the small portrait is one to live with and ponder. It is this psychological depth, with the subject’s face in shadow and a gaze focused beyond the frame, that invites us to sit and contemplate.
