Chicago’s “Musician in Color”

We’re just one week away from the opening of our fall exhibition, William S. Schwartz: Color and Coloratura, which runs from September 20 to November 24, 2021. This show accompanies Madron Press’s publication of the same title, and showcases Madron Gallery’s extensive collection of Schwartz’s paintings and lithographs, spanning the length of his prolific and groundbreaking career.

With the recent changes in local COVID-19 guidelines, we’ll be doing things a little bit differently for this show. We are offering private tours for small groups (20 people or fewer) both during and outside of our regular business hours. After some delay and much ado, we’re so excited to bring you Perpetual Motion, our winter show featuring the work of Abraham Walkowitz and his lifelong fascination with pioneering modern dancer Isadora Duncan. Walkowitz’s watercolors and drawings capture Duncan’s groundbreaking movement and lines in a way no other artist was ever quite able to. Keep an eye on your inbox for forthcoming details. Just a Small-Town Girl

William Schwartz frequently traveled the Midwest with his wife, Mona, painting the places they passed through. One such locale was Galena, a small town out by the Mississippi River in western Illinois. Schwartz rendered it with his characteristic romantic, post-Impressionistic flair, taking what might have been a straightforward street scene and animating it with rolling hills and dark, dramatic clouds. It’s his own riff on the Regionalist style popular at the time, one that evokes artists as disparate as El Greco, Cezanne, and Van Gogh.
