Reginald Marsh’s mid-20th century depictions of New York City capture the city’s aura and frenetic energy. Marsh was able to explore social class structures through scenes of burlesque clubs, beaches, and subways, fluctuating between satire and realism. After graduating from Yale in 1920, Marsh moved to New York and began working as an illustrator, producing lively cartoon reviews of vaudeville and burlesque for publications like the New York Daily News and The New Yorker. He drew inspiration from art history, particularly the exaggerated, twisted forms of the Italian Mannerists and the muscular dynamism of Baroque painters like Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) and Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863). Yet his subject matter was firmly rooted in modern urban life. Painting leisure activities between the world wars, depicting scenes of crowded burlesque houses and chaotic Coney Island beaches, his works can be both amusing and grotesque. In the 1940s he became especially interested in the Bowery and its inhabitants—primarily men of the working class who struggled in the aftermath of the Great Depression. Now filled with luxury condos, the Bowery then was an impoverished area, known for its “Bowery Bums.” These figures in Marsh’s paintings appear dejected and withdrawn, often with hands in their pockets, stripped of romanticism or humor. Marsh’s compositions, such as Bowery Scene “Strokey’s,” emphasize the harsh environment around them: advertising signs for cheap services, a shave or a haircut, “suits 40% off,” and “Strokey’s” bar sign, which appears in a number of his Bowery works. The looming structure of the elevated railway, with its crisscrossing steel frames, trap these men in an urban underworld. Marsh spent much of his career searching for the artistic medium that best suited his vision. In 1929 his friend and colleague Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) introduced him to egg tempera paint, which Marsh would favor for the next decade. After 1940, he shifted toward watercolor, a medium he had primarily used only for small, outdoor studies until then, now adapting it to larger works. Marsh simplified his compositions, focusing on fewer figures and granting them greater individuality. He valued watercolor, saying it allowed for visual clarity and better draftsmanship. In 1943, the year before he produced Bowery Scene “Strokey’s,” he began experimenting with Chinese ink, preparing the ink by rubbing a charcoal stick in water. Elements of this technique are visible in Bowery Scene “Strokey’s,” where his watercolor application is transparent with layered washes and rubbed surfaces, unified by cool, silvery-gray tones. Marsh reworked the surface, adding layers of paint, repeatedly outlining some texts and figures with darker pigment. The medium and color palette reflect the shabby figures and grimy surfaces of the Bowery and its inhabitants. Marsh has proven difficult to categorize, with scholars labeling him a realist, satirist, and romantic. Lloyd Goodrich (1897-1987), the former director of the Whitney Museum and a childhood friend of Marsh, claimed that the artist had, “satirized the rich, but his treatment of the Bowery derelicts had been without social or political implications. For this he was frequently taken to task by Marxist critics and artists; he was only a Yale man in bum’s clothing.” The contrast between Marsh's privileged upbringing (his grandfather was a wealthy Chicago meat packer) and his fascination with urban poverty, complicates both historical and contemporary interpretations of his work. His compositions intersect with the period’s “slumming” trends, where upper-class New Yorkers visited neighborhoods such as Chinatown, Harlem, and the Bowery, to observe class and racial difference. For period audiences, collecting Marsh’s work allowed the upper class to create boundaries between their privileged position and the rapidly changing city. However, in contrast to his earlier paintings of upper and lower-class amusements that featured masses of figures, Marsh’s later Bowery works offer more individualized depictions. In Bowery Scene “Strokey’s,” for instance, several figures directly engage the viewer. By depicting marginalized figures without idealization, Marsh forces audiences to confront realities often ignored. In this sense, his realism itself becomes a subtle form of commentary and ultimately raises questions about whether he represented a nuanced view of the lower classes, or maintained a voyeuristic lens to assuage upper-class anxieties.
