Artist of the Month: Lawton Parker
Lawton Parker, known for his exceptional figurative work, was a student at such highly regarded institutions as Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Academie Julian, The Art Students League and The Art Institute of Chicago. It was in Chicago that he was the pupil of painter, John H. Vanderpoel (founder of the The Vanderpoel Art Association, a collection still on view at the Ridge Park Fieldhouse in the south side of Chicago). In New York, William Merrit Chase and John La Farge would influence his style before he moved on to Paris and Giverny. Winning numerous awards and commissions, Parker found comraderie among other like-minded painters of picturesque gardens and delicate women sitters such as Theodore Robinson, Guy Rose, Frederic Frieseke and Richard Miller.
